Congratulations!  You just got engaged over the holidays and romance and excitement fill the air.  All you are thinking about right now is what you will wear, where the wedding will take place, who will be in the wedding, etc.  In order to avoid disappointment there are important things that need to be done well in advance.

Below is a checklist of things to do as soon after your engagement as possible:

  • Set a date for the wedding…also set a backup date in case the venue you fall in love with is booked.
  • Think about the style of wedding you want…generally the venue dictates the style so be clear in what your vision is.
  • Determine the number of guests.  You will need a rough idea of numbers to be sure the venue is appropriate.
  • Decide on your budget.  You can’t book anything if you don’t know how much you can afford to spend.
  • Start looking for ceremony locations, reception locations and caterers. Booking as early as possible vastly increases your chances of getting the day you want.  Book your officiant at the same time you are booking the venues.
  • Start researching musicians, photographers, videographers and florists.  The great vendors get booked well in advance so it’s never too soon to reserve your date.

Memorable weddings don’t just happen…they are planned.   My next article will review what to do next.
